Blind debossing
A blind debossing is an impression without using ink. It is a subtle way to create structure without colour. With some designs we recommend using a little splash of transparent white to add more body to the blind debossing.
-
C
Coloured edges
The coloured edges can be the final step in the finishing of a production. The thicker the stock the better the effect. This is another way of adding colour to your project.
-
D
Die-cut
Die cutting is a process where a machine uses a sharp die to cut materials like paper, fabric, or metal into specific shapes. It allows for precise, repeatable cuts that would be difficult to achieve manually.
-
Digital printing
Our studio hosts a couple of Heidelberg Tiegel platen presses and with those we have certain limitations. Digital printing is not a standard product for us but we are happy to add it to a production here or there. For example if we have to print pictures or business cards with a large number of different names.
-
Dummy Service
If you require a more complex product like boxes, slip cases, or other we recommend making a prototype in original size and material before production. Please get in touch.
-
Duplexing
Laminating, or pasting as it is sometimes referred to, is the simple process of gluing two or more sheets of paper together. Depending on the volume of the production it can extend the delivery times due to the drying process.
-
E
Embossing
Embossing is the process of raising text or an image above the level of the print material, so it sits slightly proud of the material around it. To emboss print, you’ll need two plates (dies), one of which has a 3D render of the image or word you need to emboss, and the other with a recess exactly the same size and shape. The embossing is always visible from both sides.
-
G
Gilded edges
The edges can also be finished with metallic foils in different colours. We don't do this in-house, so delivery times have to be discussed before each production.
-
H
Hot foil Stamping
Hot foil stamping foil is a specialized film used to permanently transfer metallic, holographic, or pigmented colors onto a surface using heat and pressure. Metallic foils are more robust than pigmented foils and are therefore easier to use in combination with uncoated paper stock.

L
Letterpress
Letterpress printing is a centuries-old relief printing technique where inked, raised surfaces—traditionally metal or wood type—are pressed directly onto paper, creating a distinct, tactile, and slightly indented impression. The effect works best with paper stock from 500g and more.

P
Packaging
We develop packaging from the ground up and produce it with all the trimmings: folding boxes, slip cases or slot-together constructions, finished on request with embossing, hot foil and more. Die-cutting, creasing and finishing all come from one source. For the development phase we recommend our Dummy Service (see above).
-
R
Relief embossing
Relief embossing is a print finishing technique that is used primarily for high-quality printing. It raises the design in 3D and is often combined with hot foil. Same as with embossing, the motif is visible from both sides.
How we work

We are happy to advise you on the options available, materials and the feasibility of your ideas. Many questions are answered in our FAQ. You will also find our data sheet there, which will help you prepare your data. We can send you paper samples and examples of how your ideas can be implemented on request.
Our suppliers produce printing plates based on the print data. As soon as these arrive at our premises, we can get started. The required paper should also be ready by then. Anyone who would like to attend the proof run is welcome to do so. Let's get started!
Once everything has been printed, dried, embossed, die-cut, creased and trimmed, the quality control team takes another close look to check that everything is perfect. Boxed and shipped off to you. In general all of this should take no more than two weeks.

What is Letterpress printing?
Put simply, letterpress printing is a form of relief printing, where the text or image is on a raised surface, similar to a rubber stamp. Ink is applied to the raised surface and then paper is pressed directly against it to transfer the text/image.

What is the difference between blind embossing and blind debossing?
The fundamental difference is the dimension of the design: embossing raises a design upward (the paper is formed from both sides), while debossing presses it downward. The term "blind" simply means no ink or foil is used; the design relies solely on the tactile, three-dimensional impression created in the material.
-
3
What kind of paper stock is suitable for letterpress printing?
The ideal paper stock for embossing is an uncoated heavy paper. You want thick, long-fiber, and soft cotton papers that are flexible enough to hold raised shapes without tearing or cracking under high pressure. We also like printing on leather or wood, please just get in touch.

What is the maximum size we can handle?
For letterpress with pantone ink or blind embossings with printing varnish we are limited to a working format of 25x35cm. For hotfoil stamping or blind embossing without any additional inks or varnishes we can go up to A3+.
Hi and welcome
A team is only as good as its team spirit. And a team spirit is only as good as having lunch together. When you fall into a pot of colour as a child, what are you going to be when you grow up? Right, a Gaul. Or a printer. As a team you can make deep impressions, sometimes into the paper or even beyond.
